What Kind of Person do You Want Your Children to be When They Leave Home?

I was listening to a podcast a few weeks ago. I can’t remember what kind of podcast it was (maybe a homeschool one, maybe a parenting one), but the speaker posed a question that got me thinking: What kind of person do you want your children to be when they leave home?

I’m sure I’ve been asked the question before; I just don’t think I’ve ever really thought too much about it. Actually, I probably have thought about it. Subconsciously I knew what I wanted my future kids to be. I understand that my kids won’t <<POOF>> become these things just because they leave the house. The list has to be things we teach and work on regularly in the home. It’s actually part of the culture we’ve created.

This time when I heard the question I started writing down my thoughts. I also asked Jonathan to give his input.

Below is the list we came up with. It is the things we wrote down without really thinking—the first things that came to our minds. It’s a pretty good starting point.

What would you add to the list? Or not include? What kind of person you want your children to become?

•Hard worker—willing to do the hard things and the dirty jobs
•Not afraid to get out of comfort zone and not accept labels
•Confident—an “I got this” kind of attitude
•Kind
•Servant—looking for ways to help even when it’s not convenient
•Lifelong learner—learning doesn’t end after high school
•Know how to learn—if they don’t know the answer to a question, know how to find the answer
•Happy and Grateful
•Spiritual—Christ-like
•Healthy—feel good physically
•Self-controlled—having a high emotional quotient
•Leader—so many things are summed up in this word
•Independent to Interdependent
•Making a difference/Being a force for good
•Chasing their passion—living the life they were created for
