Halloween 2018

I’m not the biggest fan of Halloween.

Maybe it’s all the sugar-y treats.

It could be the fact that I’m not the creative type, and the idea of creating costumes is terrifying.

Even the idea of spending $20 per kid for a cheap costume is scary.

So I silently cheered when I learned we would be busy with other activities for all the normal Halloween parties.

For some reason this didn’t deter my youngest. She has been super into Halloween. She drew and wrote and crafted Halloween things. And all month long she planned her costume. She searched Pinterest for ideas, scoured the dress-up bucket (and her older siblings stuff) for things she needed, and created a pirate costume without spending a dime.

Then early this week it dawned on her. . .”Why did I spend all that time creating a costume, if I’m not even going to get to use it?” (I’d been thinking the same thing the whole month.)

My mommy heart broke and I told her I could take her trick-or-treating to a few houses in the neighborhood on Halloween night. Her face lit up!

When the next two oldest kids learned I was going to take her they decided to find costumes and come too.

All we did was walk around the block one time. There were maybe 5 houses, but all 3 kids came home with a full bucket of candy.

I let them keep 5 pieces and hid the rest.

Go ahead.

Call me a grump.

I just don’t think they need all that sugar.

I did find a couple of sites here and here that gave ideas of how to use up all the extra candy. Is it bad to make a treat with the candy and give it away?

Even though I have a grumpy attitude about Halloween, I love seeing the kids get excited about the simple things in life. Tonight was a fun night and I’m glad we did it.
